The Youth Select Committee (YSC) is a UK Youth Parliament initiative hosted by the National Youth Agency and supported by the House of Commons, which is taking its evidence in public and has its proceedings televised and recorded in Hansard. The YSC model was originally developed by the British Youth Council in partnership with Parliament as part of its Youth Voice programme when its members were a mixture of representatives from across the UK (See BYC UKYP Archive 5  for details and past reports) The new model is all members of the UK Youth Parliament aged 14-28 whose applicants chose the topic and set the terms of reference below. The group receives induction training and mentoring from parliamentary Clerks and National Youth Agency staff and will produce a report in the new year. If this model follows the pattern of its predecessors its report will get a Government report in response, making it an example of Good Practice – “Youth Said We Did” and will hopefully focus policy makers on this key issue. 

Social media and youth violence inquiry 2024 

Following inquiry topic suggestions by over 80 Members of Youth Parliament applying to become Committee members, the Committee agreed to conduct an inquiry on youth violence and social media.

  • The extent to which social media platforms promote violent content  
  • How social media companies enforce age restrictions   
  • The effectiveness of UK Government policy in protecting young people from harmful online content

Oral evidence sessions tool place to hear from a range of organisations and witnesses including Govt Ministers on  Thursday 12 and Friday 13 December.  Its expected that recordings of the sessions will be broadcast on Parliament TV next week – watch this space for updates.

 

The Committee is particularly interested in understanding young people’s exposure to and engagement with violence on social media more broadly. Specifically, the Committee will be examining the links between young people’s exposure to content depicting serious or weapon-based violence, such as knife crime, and incidents of youth violence.

As part of the inquiry the Committee will look at issues including:

  • The extent to which social media platforms promote violent content.
  • How social media companies enforce age restrictions.
  • The effectiveness of UK Government policy in protecting young people from harmful online content.
