Youth Voice and Influence in YVH Heritage Projects 2020-2023

News, Youth Social Action
Young Voices Heard were partners on two initiatives funded by Historic England on valuing, celebrating and protecting our heritage. The first was a social action pilot with the Volunteer Police Cadets 2019-2022, followed by a feasibility study building on this in partnership with Youth United Foundation (network of uniformed organisations) Youth voice, participation and influence were key elements of both the national development and local delivery of these initiatives and are part of an ongoing process of partnership development between the youth and heritage sectors. Contact James Cathcart using the form below for more information or if you would like to work with YVH on mobilising your youth voice to explore heritage, identity and partnership project funding. The #Campaign4YouthRecognition calls on people and organisations to make more nominations of exceptional young citizens for national recognition. The latest addition to YVH recommended list* are The British Citizen Youth Awards (BCyA).  Managed by the charity 'The British Citizen Awards', it only awards 24 medals a year to those helping others through fund-raising, awareness-raising or social action. At this year’s Westminster celebration in October, YVH founder and BCyA Ambassador James Cathcart joined Sec of Sate for Education Gillian Keegan MP and singer/dancer/judge and Patron of BCyA Kimberley Wyatt, in presenting some of the awards. In this blog he talks about the event, his #Campaign4Youth Recognition and calls on us all to 'not just notice young peoples success, but nominate them for recognition'. (more…)

Power of Youth Challenge:  News, Report and Recommendations from 'Young Voices Heard'. Over a year ago the young ambassadors of the #iwill ‘campaign for youth social action’ challenged stakeholders and society to: “Listen to Us, Work with Us and Invest in Us”. Young Voices Heard responded with a range of opportunities for young people to have their say, and to work together on an agenda to further embed the power of youth and amplify youth voice in public life. Young people were also saying "Dont just make a pledge and act on it, but also give us feedback and credit for our ideas". This 'post' is YVH's feedback and acknowledgement of young peoples inspiration and leadership in exploring a range of proposals for investment, some of which YVH has been…

National Youth Social Action Survey 2019: Review

News, News and Blogs, Youth Social Action
Findings from the latest Youth Social Action Survey (2019) show that whilst 88% young people still care about making the world a better place, and 86% agreed that is was important to try and make a difference, there has been a downward trend in youth social action since the annual survey started in 2014. Why?   The report and analysis were commissioned from Ipsos MORI by the Dept for Culture Media and Sport to inform and influence the Step Up to Service iwill campaign. It aims to make meaningful social action part of everyday life for 10 to 20 year olds across the UK and has invested £70m through the #iwill fund. (more…)

Young Voices Heard has signed up to the Power of Youth Charter :  Five 'we will' commitments to - #prioritise opportunities for, #open up decision-making with , #work collaboratively on, #evidence impact from, and #recognise - the power of youth . The Charter is one of the legacies of the Step Up To Serve #iwill campaign for youth social action, which draws to a close this December 2020.  In particular we have championed the quality of youth participation "in decision-making, leading and shaping both the activities they are involved in and wider organisational decisions". We will go further than holding ourselves to account by those young people we work with but will offer an independent youth scrutiny and support service to others signing up and plugging in to the power…

Has it stood the test of time? 'The Participation Charter 2006' set out a vision of #youthvoice empowered to have say in decision-making. Many of its principles still apply today but is it enough in 2020 and beyond? How can we collaborate with young leaders, listening to, working with and investing in participation and leadership to refreshed a vision and charter? Whilst not the earliest youth voice charter we've come across, this 'Participation Charter' was published by Children Young People Now magazine on 6th June 2006*, in association with the Participation Works Consortium**.  James…

#PupilVoice and Covid19

News and Blogs, Youth Social Action
During a summer of covid-related challenges for the education sector students views were increasingly reported by the media to a wider audience than is usual.  The exam results announcements are traditionally a time when cameras and microphones are poised to capture the reaction of pupils. This year the 'algorithm' produced such a range of results and young people were on hand - shocked and disbelieving. This turned to questioning and challenging politicians to respond, and in some places backed with street protests. When the politicians announced a change of policy, at least one education minister acknowledged the influential role of students who had contacted him.  What can we learn from this experience about how youthvoice can be better empowered and amplified in a way that has agency and impact? It…
